An ED0 application is an admission exclusive to the University of Chicago. It is offered to students who have completed either a UChicago residential or an online UChicago Pre-Summer Session Program. As a binding commitment that applies to UChicago, it has a series of pros and cons, which depend on the student’s commitment, preferences, and pending applications to other universities.

About ED0

What is ED0?

Early Action, Early Decision, and Regular Decision applications significantly differ from this type of application.

An Early Decision Zero (ED0) application, also known as the Summer Student Early Notification (SSEN), is a binding commitment offered only by the University of Chicago (UChicago). This program is for students who are 100% committed to studying at UChicago.

ED0 is for students who:

  • Are in their senior year of high school
  • Have completed either a UChicago residential or an online UChicago Pre-Summer Session Program
  • Have participated in UChicago’s Summer Student Early Notification
  • Have shown interest in pursuing their studies at UChicago for college

Applications for ED0

Applications for the 2026 UChicago Pre-Summer Session Program will open on September 1, 2026, and close on October 15, 2026. Students can receive their results three weeks after completing their application (before November 1).

How to Apply for ED0

To apply for ED0, you must create a first-year applicant UChicago Account with the same name, birthday, and email address used in your Summer Session Application. Then, select “Early Action” for your chosen plan.

Why Apply for ED0?

Because ED0 is offered only by UChicago, students can receive their results earlier than with other applications. This may affect their applications to other universities. Here is a list of pros and cons to take a look at if you consider applying for Early Decision 0:

Pros of Applying for Early Decision 0

Secured Slot

Once you are admitted to UChicago’s ED0 or SSEN, you are guaranteed a slot, as you must commit to the university. If this is your target school, you do not need to worry about getting accepted into other universities for the remainder of the semester.

Backup Options

However, if you have been rejected, waitlisted, or deferred, you will still have ample time to apply Early Action or Regular Decision at other universities. ED0 results are released three weeks after the application deadline (after November 1).

More Preparation Time

Compared to other applications that release results in March or April, students can receive their results as early as November 1. With other applications, they still need to wait until March or April, leaving them little to no time to prepare for college life ahead.

Recommendation Letters

The recommendation letter requirement will be waived for students who have participated in the Summer Session program before their senior year of high school. This saves them time and effort as they do not need to request letters of recommendation from their high school professors and mentors.

Higher Acceptance Rates

Since ED0 is for students who have participated in UChicago’s Summer Program, they are more likely to be admitted than other students who will apply to UChicago through Regular Decision, which opens at a later date.

Cons of Applying for Early Decision 0:

UChicago Offered Only

Early Decision 0 is exclusive to the University of Chicago. If students are still unsure of where to study or are interested in applying to other universities, they cannot apply for ED0, as those universities do not offer it.

Commitment

ED0 is a binding commitment, meaning a student is expected to attend UChicago once accepted. Because of this, you must be 100% certain you want to enroll in and pursue your college degree at UChicago. If you have pending applications to other schools, you will need to forgo them.

Less Time to Polish Application

Since ED0 applications open earlier compared to other applications, you must submit your application to UChicago right away. You will not have much time to develop your soft skills, improve your grades, or make your application stand out more to college admissions.
