About Bryan

Bryan is from Shanghai and attended a private junior high school in China until 8th grade. During the winter break of that year, he had the opportunity to pursue ice hockey in Canada and decided to enroll in a private boys’ school there.

Bryan took part in a wide range of extracurricular activities throughout high school. He played ice hockey, piano, and clarinet, and joined the robotics team. He also participated in the school band, track and field, and competitive hockey, which involved two practices and two games each week and required long trips to the rink. Managing this busy schedule taught him how to plan his time well and handle multiple responsibilities, even when he needed to stay up late to finish his work.

Outside of school, Bryan performed in Chicago with his band, volunteered in the Amazon rainforest, and joined team activities and various clubs. These experiences helped him see the world from different perspectives, and combined with his analytical nature, they allowed him to grow, mature, and understand himself better.

Working with Ivy Talent

Bryan worked closely with Ivy Talent throughout his entire application journey. They guided him in organizing and refining every part of the process, from selecting schools to drafting essays. Rather than trying to change who he was, Bryan focused on understanding himself, and Ivy Talent helped him recognize his strengths and find the best ways to express his ideas clearly and authentically.

For instance, in one of his essays, he used the requirement to wear formal attire before hockey games as a metaphor for his serious approach to life. Ivy Talent helped him take insights like this and develop them into unique and compelling essays that showcased his personality and perspective. These essays were not only memorable but also aligned closely with the values and expectations of the University of Chicago, helping him stand out in the admissions process.

How Ivy Talent Helped

Academic and Extracurricular Planning

Bryan had many interests, from liberal arts to science, and Ivy Talent helped him focus on what mattered most during high school. After taking his teacher’s advice, he decided to pursue physics as a possible career, while also exploring engineering and economics. Ivy Talent supported him in choosing courses and opportunities that matched his goals, including summer programs that gave him experience with American college life.

Application Documents and Essays

A key part of Bryan’s success was his essays. The Ivy Talent team worked with him to develop both his “Why UChicago” essay and his creative writing essay, helping him organize his thoughts, clarify his ideas, and bring out his voice.

Bryan had strong AP scores and a TOEFL score of 112, but he did not take the SAT. Ivy Talent helped him highlight his unique experiences, such as balancing demanding athletics with his academic responsibilities. By showing how he could excel both as an athlete and a scholar, Bryan was able to present a well-rounded and authentic application that stood out to the admissions committee.

Staying on Track

One of Bryan’s biggest challenges during the application process was time management. Ivy Talent helped him stay organized and focused. He drafted essays, reviewed them with his teachers, and revised them multiple times, which made the process much more manageable. Bryan also learned the importance of communication by sharing his ideas with both his teachers and his father.

Ivy Talent guided him step by step, helping him plan essay timelines, prioritize schools, and maintain a consistent application schedule. Their support covered everything from understanding each school’s requirements to offering mentorship and encouragement throughout the process, ensuring Bryan stayed confident and on track.

Reflection

Bryan highlights the importance of understanding yourself and choosing schools that align with your goals. Based on his experience, he offers the following advice for future applicants:

  • Focus on what makes you unique in your personal statement rather than only emphasizing academic achievements or hobbies.
  • Have a clear understanding of your chosen major so your “Why This School” essays feel genuine and thoughtful.
  • Make sure to set aside plenty of time to work on your essays
  • Communicate regularly with teachers and, if you are working with a college consultant, keep in touch with them as well. Consultants can provide guidance, help you organize your process, and give constructive feedback based on their experience.
  • Avoid comparing yourself to others and focus on your own priorities.
  • Follow a structured schedule for your applications and trust the process.

Bryan’s experience shows that getting into a top college is about much more than test scores. Success comes from exploring your interests, and sharing your story in a meaningful way. Combining your unique experiences with careful planning and guidance can help you present your strengths clearly and authentically to admissions officers.
