Choate vs. Hotchkiss Admissions Process

Choate’s admissions begin with an Inquiry Form on their official website. Afterwards, students are invited to schedule an admission interview. The interview is strongly encouraged, takes place online, and is offered between September and February.
Applicants submit transcripts, recommendations, essays, and other required application materials through Gateway to Prep Schools. Choate’s standardized testing policy is currently test-optional. Students who choose to submit scores may use different tests depending on their grade level.
For English proficiency tests, international applicants need the TOEFL or IELTS. For the current admission cycle, the application deadline is January 15. Choate notes that some late materials may be accepted through February 1.
The Hotchkiss School
Hotchkiss has a very similar admissions process to Choate. It begins with an Admission Inquiry Form from their official website. Afterward, the student is required to schedule an interview, which is either in-person or virtual. In-person interviews are accompanied by a student-led tour. The standardized testing for Hotchkiss depends on the student’s grade level. 9th and 10th graders are required to submit either SSAT or ISEE scores, while 11th graders are required to submit either SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, or SAT. Hotchkiss uses Gateway to Prep Schools for its application. The application includes the Candidate Profile, Candidate Project, parent statement, school records, and teacher recommendations.
Remember that when applying to either school, students should not rely on having excellent grades and achievements alone.
